My Rehab Counselor Only Had 12 Days of Education? How Is He Qualified?
Rachel asked:
I was convicted of underaged as a teenager. I went to an outpatient rehab in which the counselors repeatedly used the “f-word.” For example they went around the room and asked “Do you drink to get effed up?” The counselor also called me a b-word.
The counselors all had a “CAC-1″ Qualification. I looked at this website. http://www.odysseycenter.com/courses/cac/CAC-3.htm
The education for a CAC-1 is only two weeks!
I am finishing up for undergrad and am applying to a PhD program this fall. I am going to be a clinical psychologist and I would NEVER use the f-word so frequently to my patients. They used all kinds of swear words–Words I had never heard of!
What do you think of that? I had an extremely bad experience with that rehab. Can I use my negative experience to strengthen me to be the best psychologist I can be? I will know how much it hurt me so I will never ever treat my patients like that. I believe that everyone deserves respect, even teens that experiment with alcohol.
Thoughts?
Sorry typo: Underaged drinking.

I need to answer this for some extra credit. Some human services are religious workers, counselors, clinical psychologists, psychiatric case workers, and speech therapists. I can’t figure it out. Please help! Thanks!

How do I get over this depression by myself?
Starr asked:
I know that my depression isn’t normal, even though I’m 15 years old. I am pretty sure I have Dysthymic Disorder or Clinical Depression. I am completely sure I have Social Anxiety because since I was young I have been rejected many times by friends, or I just completely lost contact with a friend. This got me scared to talk to people, and eventually it built up, more and more. Now I don’t have any close friends. I don’t know what to do now because there’s no where I could turn to.
I told my Mom how I was feeling and she said that she’ll take me to a psychiatrist, but she never keeps her promises, and besides my family can’t afford to take me to one. I told my Dad about it and he said there’s nothing wrong with me and that I’m pathetic and have no will power to change myself. This just makes me so much more depressed when he says stuff like this to me.
I don’t know who to talk to because I don’t really feel comfortable talking to my Guidence Counselor. What should I do?
The major problem with me is I don’t know what my hobbies are. When I was little I just sat around and played video games all day, but now I don’t like video games. And with social anxiety it disables me from going outside and finding activities to do. Nobody could possibly understand what I’m talking about unless they have experienced social anxiety themselves. Also getting out of bed is the hardest part of my day because I’m not motivated to do so. And what’s strange is I almost always get depressed at night time, but as soon as the sun starts coming up I feel so much better.

Should I become a counselor?
JJ asked:
I have a bachelor’s degree in social work and I was thinking of going to get my msw and then start the process of fulfilling the other requirements necessary to become a licensed clinical social worker so that i could become a counselor. The problem is I am not sure if I should become a counselor. On one hand I think it would be a fun job, but I think that may just be me being idealistic. I do like learning about mental health and mental disorders, but I don’t know if thats reason enough for me to go into that career. I am very shy, so that’s another concern I have. Also I have been in counseling before and I thought that would be helpful because then I would be more empathetic and caring to my patients. However I realize that it may not because I currently work as a residential counselor and it is hard to relate their mental health issues to mine because there’s are a lot worse. Is anyone on here a counselor. What do you like about your work and not like. (continued below)
Also what traits are necesssary.

If you are a counselor or study psychology-PLEASE help me?
JaSLeNe x0×0 asked:
I am going to school next year to study social work, and eventually be a clinical sw because i want to be a therapist. work in a practice or even in a school counseling center.
Heres my problem and it may sound stupid-but here goes:
when i get nervous, I get really gassy, and my stomach makes weird noises and i feel like i have to fart.
I am afraid that when i start my fieldwork and eventually become a counselor, I will feel nervous, and sitting with someone, my body will make these noises. I dont understand because i dont feel nervous, but my body does, if that makes sense.
How can I calm myself down so I can just sit comfortably?

What college majors should I go for if I want to be a school psychologist? What about for a guidance counselor
Julia asked:
Right now I am at a community college basically getting liberal arts out of the way. I know that I’m interested in being a school psychologist or guidance counselor but I’m confused about what I should be looking for in 4 year colleges.
For both career options should I get a bachelors in developmental, clinical, social, or general psych? something else?
Then what would I do for grad school regarding a specialization for my masters degree? I’m not sure how this works.
I would like to hear your input about the most appropriate ways to go for my careers goals. ( for both school psychologist and guidance counselor)
thanks so much!
