What college majors should I go for if I want to be a school psychologist? What about for a guidance counselor

Julia asked:

Right now I am at a community college basically getting liberal arts out of the way. I know that I’m interested in being a school psychologist or guidance counselor but I’m confused about what I should be looking for in 4 year colleges.

For both career options should I get a bachelors in developmental, clinical, social, or general psych? something else?

Then what would I do for grad school regarding a specialization for my masters degree? I’m not sure how this works.

I would like to hear your input about the most appropriate ways to go for my careers goals. ( for both school psychologist and guidance counselor)

thanks so much!

My supervisor’s wife is a school counselor, she got her undergrad in clinical psychology and her master’s in school counseling from a state school I’m not sure if it matters what subfield of psychology, maybe someone else knows for sure. Once you get your masters you will be able to take your test for becoming a licensed professional counselor, which would help if you ever needed another “outlet”, or whatever. I wish you the best. By the way, she works with special needs children, and loves it!
P.S, the coursework for master is hard, but don’t be discouraged, she did 4 big tests in a week and a half, but that was at this school and in the state of Missouri.

Honestly, your best bet is a double major in psychology and child development. Im not sure if most colleges have a Developmental Psychology major. I think Psychology is basically turning into Neuropsychology-biology, making it more brain-centered and less personality-centered (unfortunately), so even with a Psych major, you maybe want to try Sociology or Child Development, something that will hit the aspect of the persona that psychology is lacking.

And I would plan now to get a masters in psychology, because a B.S psych isnt enough for school psychologist/guidance counselor anymore, minimum degree is a Masters. But you dont really need to worry about Masters yet. Grad school is rather easy, and most times during your last year at a college, your academic advisor goes over the options for grad school with you.

    I hope that makes sense!!
