Best minor for Clinical Psych grad school?

D asked:

I am currently majoring in Psychology and have no complaints. However, I think it would be very beneficial for me to either double major or minor in a subject. I either want to attend grad school for clinical psychology or become a genetics counselor. I really want to help and counsel people and like biology. I was thinking of minoring in biology. I am also interested in sociology and anthropology. If grad school for psych doesn’t work out then I will probably do Law School. What combo of minors would work the best for me?

English is a suggested pre-law, pre-med, and pre-business major. However, it also looks good to have English as a minor. Sociology is also a good minor to have. Since there are master degree programs for a person to become a community counselor a lot of times this is tied in with the sociology and social work departments.

However, if you are thinking that you might eventually go to law school, English is a suggested pre-law major, but is also very good as a minor since law schools do not require a person to have a certain major.

I think it’s great that you either want to counsel people or be a lawyer, because both tend to help people. However, it’s also great that you weren’t fooled by a lot of the pre-law and pre-med type majors out there as unfortunately is the case, many students after having that type of major either change their minds about grad school or they don’t get in. Best of luck to you!

I’d go with some of the ‘hard” sciences like biology (= neurology), or chemistry. In my opinion, psychology in the traditional sense (with “talk-therapy” and all) will gradually die out. We find out more and more, that the brain alters (or starts off) for what ever reasons (childhood experiences, genetics, injury etc.) and that most so called “mental” illness’ are really chemical and actual electronic malfunctions (physical) of the brain.
