clinical psychology?
Ashley asked:
Im a senior in high school and I was wondering what kind of education is needed to become a clinical psychologist. Is it just a master’s or a doctorate? At a college nearby there is a masters program for clinical psychology and on the website it says after completion you can take a test to be a Licensed Psychological Examiner. What exactaly does that mean? What is the difference in a marriage and family counselor and a clinical psychologist? Also does anyone know the salary for these occupations in the southern states? Thank you so much!

One Response to “clinical psychology?”
Licensure as a psychologist will require a doctorate (either a Ph.D. or a Psy.D.). To become a psychologist, you will also need a 1 year, APA approved internship, 1-3 years of supervised practice (depending on your state’s individual requirements), and to pass a test called the EPPP. Most doctoral programs also require a dissertation.
A “licensed psychological examiner” is a person who administers, scores, and interprets psychological tests (e.g., I.Q. tests, personality tests, vocational tests). A psychological examiner is not licensed to conduct psychotherapy.
A marriage and family counselor may have either an M.S. or a Ph.D. (in most states). In practice, both an MFT and a psychologist both see individuals and/or families. Both conduct therapy. Both are licensed to practice independently.
